Founded in 1911 and built by the U.S. Army soldiers from New York in 1913, the Sacred Heart Catholic Church sits prettily in downtown McAllen. Still an active parish, this yellow brick structure attracts a number of locals as well as tourists. The mammoth spire bearing a cross at a height of 60 feet (18 meters) is one of its prominent architectural features.

Housed inside an old post office (now known as La Placita) in downtown McAllen, McAllen Heritage Center takes you through the history of the city. This lovely bird sanctuary offers a view of more than 15 acres of bird habitats. Quinta Mazatlan is a house of natural research on birds, plants and environments in South Texas. In addition to the more than 500 species of birds, take a peek at the sanctuary's butterfly residents and walk through the lush gardens.
