This popular museum on the suburban campus of Cranbrook Schools is worth the drive, especially for a family outing. A USD31 million expansion in 1996 included a new Dynamic Earth exhibit, which features a full-size T. Rex dinosaur skeleton. Well-known for its observatory, planetarium and laser light shows, the well-respected Cranbrook Institute imparts natural history and science education in creative ways that blend old and new approaches. Outdoor activities, including eclipse viewing and maple tree tapping, are frequent. Live animals are on display at the Nature Place exhibit.

Golf enthusiasts will find this an ideal spot to enjoy live action. An award winning venue with two 18-hole courses, it is host to professional golf tournaments and tickets sell like hot cakes. Tree lined fairways, smooth, rolling greens and loads of hazards make it a spot for some challenges. The north course opened in 1924 and is exclusively for members, while the south course has been witness to some winning thwacks during the 1924, 1937, 1961, 1985 and 1996 U.S. Opens and also hosted the 2008 PGA championships. The clubhouse itself is a replica of George Washington's Mt. Vernon home and is worth a visit.
