Dubbed by locals as "The Grand Canyon of Texas", Palo Duro Canyon State Park is a 20,000 acre area covering ground from Randall Counties to the Texas Panhandle. The first Spanish explorers named the area "Palo Duro" which means "hard wood" because of the abundant juniper and mesquite trees. Today, the canyon is known for its natural beauty which can be taken in on a guided horseback riding tour. Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument offers two hour tours by reservation when the weather permits. The Madame Queen is a prototype 2-10-2 locomotive that was constructed in 1930 for the Santa Fe Railroad. The locomotive has been on display to the public for over 50 years. At the time of its use, the Madame Queen was the premiere locomotive of its day. The galleries are divided into 35 studios, where every second Saturday of the month there is live entertainment and featured artists.
