Plaza Blocks-these two blocks are cornerstones of Portland's history. The northern block, Chapman Square, is named for a Portland attorney who dedicated this parcel to the city in 1852; the southern block, Lownsdale Square, is named for one of Portland's first settlers. Citizens would gather at these squares to listen to orators. The ladies would assemble at Chapman Square while the gentlemen would gather at Lownsdale Square. Of course, the entire park is open to both genders today.
