Cannery Row is a fantastic waterfront street a mile down the coast from Fisherman's Wharf. The street is featured in John Steinbeck's book Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday. Cannery Row is named after old sardine canning factories, but those factories are no longer operational and instead house stores, restaurants and bars. You can easily spend days shopping and eating at wonderful restaurants. Cannery Row is also a marine sanctuary, so you'll probably see California sea lions sunning themselves. If you want to learn more or help the sea lions visit the Friends of the Sea Otter shop. And no trip to Cannery Row is complete without visiting the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium.
The cuddly, photogenic creatures that were nearly wiped out by fur traders in the 1700s and 1800s are still few in number. Friends of the Sea Otter is dedicated to educating people about the otters and expanding efforts to save them. The organization's store at Cannery Row sells jewelry, stuffed toys, posters, calendars and lots more otter-themed merchandise and apparel. The store is equally popular with animal rights activists and shoppers who just want a cute toy or a Monterey souvenir.
Beads of every color of the rainbow, not to mention neutral, black, white, beige and translucent tones, can be found at this store. Glass, crystal, metal and acrylic beads fill the containers all around the store. There are also lots of unusual, eye-catching beads made of porcelain, brass, bone and wood. Purchase all the beads you need to make your own jewelry as well as the clasps, string and other necessities. People who want the look but do not have the patience to create it can purchase jewelry made by Kris Avina, the owner of the store.
Specializing in garlic products from all over California, For Garlic Lovers first opened its doors on Cannery Row in 2004. The walls, shelves, ceiling and floor are crowded with all things garlic. Purchase garlic olives, garlic potato chips, garlic sauce or garlic jelly (no, really). Go for baskets of garlic edibles or just an entire braid of garlic. Just don't plan on initiating any seaside romance after sampling your purchases. See website for more details.
This shopping mall encompasses more than 600,000-square-feet of retail space filled with just about everything you could possibly want. This is not really an upscale touristy place like The Barnyard in nearby Carmel. Instead, it is your basic, run-of-the-mill suburban mall. You will find a Macy's, bookstores, art galleries, eateries, lots of clothing stores, gift shops, stationers and more. Make a day of it at this shopping Mecca.
This five-year-old gallery in Cannery Row is one of the best places on the Monterey peninsula to find an eclectic selection of candles and candle-related paraphernalia. The aroma of fine incense from the wide selection of the same hits your nose when you walk in. From aromatherapy oils to lamps, holders, and in-house handcrafted pieces, this place is pure candle-mania. Vibrant colors of every hue imaginable are represented here, and the merchandise runs the gamut from Buddha candle-holders to human-sized candles.
For over a quarter of a century, this used record shop has been a favorite amongst locals. It has won Coast Weekly's award for "best used record shop" several times and it continues to rotate its stock on a regular basis. The easy listening selection is impressive, and the place is now actually half CDs and half records. You can even bring in your old turntable and exchange it for cash. This is a neat little shop that also sells videos and posters. Prices are very reasonable.
