4220 Monarch Way
Norfolk, VA
This family-run Mexican establishment is located in a bustling part of town, right behind The Ted and in trendy Ghent neighborhood, and is definitely a popular spot with the local college scene. Although La Herradura sometimes has a reputation for being on the slow-side, they more than make up for any inadequacy with their delicious and authentic cuisine. The price point is very reasonable and often have specials on cerveza (beer).

Japanese food lends itself to the vegetarian side of things very nicely; the freshness of the ingredients and the perfect melding of flavors mean that vegetarian sushi need not be only for vegetarians. There are fake meat dishes, including sesame 'chicken' and some vegetarian 'seafood' rolls. There is an imaginative drinks menu and patrons can choose to sit at a table or traditional Japanese style, on tatami cushions on the floor. Call for reservations and opening hours.

2000 Colonial Avenue

The concept behind Luna Maya in Norfolk was to bring authentic South American recipes passed down from family members to the general public. So far, the product has been a hit with locals and visitors and people can't get enough of this spicy and flavorful cuisine. Try some of the simple and traditional dishes like chorizo tamales or enchiladas de queso and you won't leave dissatisfied.

If you're looking for refined, high-end Chinese cuisine, then Kin's Wok isn't the place for you - it serves quick, greasy, tasty Chinese fare at low prices. It's not authentic Chinese cuisine - it is very much the Americanized version - but all the favorites are there, from sweet and sour to lo mein. There are super cheap lunch specials available daily. Warning - Kin's Wok only accepts cash so be sure to have some if you're dropping by. Call for opening hours.

Katana offers decently authentic Japanese fare in a pleasant, cozy setting. The staff are extremely friendly and will answer any hibachi questions you might have. The hibachi is well worth ordering - the meat, or seafood, comes perfectly flame-grilled, retaining excellent texture and flavor. The rolls are standard American-Japanese restaurant fare, and decently priced; there are some good sushi / sashimi combo options on the menu. Call for reservations.
