Two fast-working chefs man a round griddle in the middle of this fun restaurant. You select a mixture of vegetables, meat, fish, tofu and sauce, and the chefs grill it for you on the spot. If you do not select enough food; or if you find that adding a heap of ginger was not a good idea after all; you can go back to the food bar as many times as you like. Rice, tortillas and a salad bar round out the meal. The full service bar stays open until 1am Friday and Saturday.
This three-story Harvard Square institution is more of an entertainment megaplex than a mere Chinese restaurant. The first floor is a Chinese restaurant. The second floor is a sports bar with dartboards. The third floor functions as both a comedy club and a dance club. Comedy shows take place Thursday through Sunday. Food is available on all three floors, as are gigantic scorpion bowls and other exotic concoctions.
Restaurant? Coffeehouse? Writing workshop? Cafe Algiers is all of these things. One thing is for sure, this Harvard Square landmark packs them in for falafel, tea, cerebral conversation and, of course, great Arabian coffee. Pancakes are an American alternative in an otherwise Middle Eastern menu, but no one seems to mind. So eat, drink, and be literary in the company of Harvard University undergrads and other Cambridge literati.
The extensive menu at Tanjore can be overwhelming, but the patient wait staff are happy to assist. For native Indians or diners bored with the typical curry dish, the breadth of choices is a delight. For some variety, try Bengali or Western Indian dishes. The entrees contain no beef or pork, but they're so good that you won't miss the meat.
Forest Cafe is packed with academic-looking patrons and has rustic murals and tapestries to liven up the decor. Savory moles and salsas kick the award-winning regional Mexican fare up a notch. Zesty entrees include Puerco Adobado, which is a tantalizing combination of Pork Chops complete with Yucatan seasonings and is served with white rice, black beans and greens. Most dishes can be prepared vegetarian upon request.
Border Cafe serves the best margaritas in town. Maybe that is why patrons do not seem to mind the wait that is often well over an hour on weekends. There is an enthusiastic atmosphere at the restaurant, since many of the diners are college students and exuberant tourists. Favorites include zesty, fizzling Fajitas and Popcorn Shrimp. This is a good choice for a large party.
Situated on a highway, Tokyo Restaurant offers a rare combination in the Boston area-good sushi and ample parking. Sushi platters are fresh and reasonably priced, and a la carte sushi is also available. Unusual dishes include lobster miso soup. It is Chinese owned, so the Chinese food menu is more than an afterthought. Buffet lunches and a full bar add to the appeal.
Delicious bread, spicy Indian cuisine and an extensive wine list combine to make Bombay Club a Harvard Square favorite. The wrap-around windows offer a great view of the bustling Cambridge neighborhood. Try the Chili Chicken Karahi, or for something milder the Lamb Saag. There is also a wide selection of vegetarian dishes.
