This laid-back coffeehouse is a favorite with University of Alabama at Birmingham employees and students. There is nothing particularly remarkable about the coffee, tea, bagels and baked goods sold here, but owner Lucy and her friendly staff inspire strong customer loyalty. Located near the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus, this no-frills cafeteria is packed at lunch. Even when lines stretch out the door, service is efficient. Typical lunch offerings include: meatloaf, fried chicken, turkey & dressing, collard greens, sweet potato casserole, black-eyed peas, fruit cobbler and cake. Order a la carte or choose the meat & three-vegetable specials or vegetable plates. Available by request, the pasta salad plate includes fresh fruit, vegetables and bagel chips. For breakfast, Tracy's cinnamon rolls and blueberry pancakes come highly recommended.
Located on 12th Avenue near the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Southside, The Pita Stop offers Lebanese and American cuisine in a simple, unpretentious setting. The décor is plain, but comfortable. Booths and tables are arranged in two softly lit dining rooms. The menu focuses mainly on Lebanese favorites such as kabobs and kibby; however, the restaurant also serves excellent omelets and sandwiches. This is a very popular place for lunch.
The Original Pancake House offers breakfast and lunch in a bustling yet relaxed atmosphere. The breakfast diner décor is anything but cramped; the two dining areas can (and often do) accommodate great crowds who swarm. Although they serve omelettes, crepes, sandwiches, and salads, the Pancake House specializes in spectacular plates of pancakes that are cooked on a griddle, then baked. And the portions are amazing!
Located on Highland Avenue near Five Points South, Café Bottega offers an eclectic menu of mostly Italian dishes, including pizza, in a very stylish setting. The building itself resembles a Roman civic building with faux arch and a decorative concrete facade. It's an Art-Deco style and the furnishings are elegant and tasteful. As the little brother of Bottega Restaurant, the café offers a completely different menu, but the same high level of service.

The building itself resembles a Roman civic building, with faux archways and a decorative concrete facade. The décor is Art Deco in style, and the furnishings are elegant and tasteful. The menu features a wide array of appetizers and entrées that change daily. Though many of the dishes come from all over the Mediterranean, the menu focuses mainly on Italian provincial cuisine. The dessert menu and the wine lists are extensive. Reservations are recommended but not required.
Located on Cobb Lane near Five Points South, the Blue Monkey Lounge offers a small but eclectic dinner menu and a large array of drinks and cigars in a very cozy atmosphere. The décor is that of a Parisian caveau, complete with exposed beams and stucco walls. There are several softly lit small rooms (some with televisions), which feature small black wooden tables and chairs. The menu, though small and consisting mainly of sandwiches, offers items inspired by Mexican, Greek, Italian and French cuisine. The restaurant also offers an extensive array of scotches, tequilas and cognacs.
