In addition to traditional pub grub; burgers, buffalo wings and turkey sandwiches, this corner tavern offers a small selection of fresh salads and seafood, including middle neck clams, mussels and shrimp. During the day, this is a family-friendly restaurant, with a children's menu and crayons for the kids. At night, it attracts a lot of young professionals with an extensive selection of draft beers and wine. Call to check for open hours.
Tucked away on a narrow street, this bar/cafe offers a range of Southwestern standards. Start with the Mexi-Wings, Jumbo Chicken Wings drenched with habanero sauce. Then, to cool things off a bit, have a taco salad with fresh lettuce topped with jack and cheddar cheeses, onions and tomatoes, then garnished with sour cream and guacamole. For the main course, try a house specialty. The Pollo Enrollado, a boneless chicken breast stuffed with pecan-cilantro-chili pesto and topped with a sweet cream sauce, is simply divine.
This elegant restaurant serves great sushi and traditional Japanese noodles. You will find a wonderful selection of hand rolls, made with your choice of shrimp, avocado or soft shell crab. All rolls are artistically presented and served with ginger and wasabi. For heartier fare, consider ordering a bowl of Nabe Yaki Udon, a traditional Japanese noodle served in a clear, mild broth, or a teriyaki dish with chicken, steak, seafood or vegetables. The tempura, lightly battered meats and vegetables, is also a good choice. Nichiban also features a carry-out menu online.
Set in a lovely redbrick rowhouse, this south Baltimore favorite is a great place to grab a beer and a bite. The dark wood interior is comfortable and inviting, whether you choose to sit at the long bar or in the dining room. (There're also café tables outside.) The restaurant offers a full, and very eclectic, menu, but appetizers and bar fare are what the kitchen does best. The satay is delicious, the crab cakes are first rate, and the Jambalaya is chock-full of shrimp, fish and other delights.
This family-friendly restaurant called Maria D's was recently expanded to allow for additional seating. Exposed brick walls and hand-painted murals add a charming touch to the small dining room. Maria D's has been a neighborhood favorite for years. It offers a wide selection of subs from the classic Italian to chicken parmesan and the restaurant's much beloved steak sandwiches. The restaurant also prepares delicious calzones and makes the best beer-battered onion rings in Baltimore.
Judging by its name alone, you can tell Mother's Federal Hill Grille wants to be liked. Its something-for-everybody menu and first-name-basis friendly staff confirm that desire. And, indeed, it is a likable place. From the Chicken Marsala to the Grilled Chicken in jerk marinade to the great crab cakes, the Italian/Caribbean/Baltimorean menu offers great fare. It's a great looking place as well, with polished hardwood floors and pressed-tin ceilings. And the aforementioned staff is energetically friendly without being overbearing, making this a great lunch destination.
Proving that good things do indeed come in small packages, Matsuri serves succulent sushi and traditional Japanese cuisine. The tastefully decorated dining and Sushi bar area is tiny-but thanks to a friendly staff, and nice lighting, that atmosphere is one of relaxed intimacy. Sushi fans will delight not only in the vast selection of rolls and pieces, but in the absolutely first rate ingredients, and the beautiful presentation. The cooked selections are also wonderful, featuring light but savory sauces and lots of crisp vegetables.
Set in the historic Federal Hill neighborhood, in a row home dating to the mid-1800s, this lovely establishment, with its exposed brick interior walls and candle-lit intimacy, is not only one of Baltimore's premier wine bars, but also a first-class restaurant. The wine list features more than 200 excellent selections, primarily from small American vintners, and the entrees are hearty, flavorful and created specifically to accompany certain wines. The Muscovy Duck Breast with Wild Rice and Wild Cherry Demi-Glace, for instance, is paired with a Cedar Brook Winery "California" Pinot Noir.
