Alchemist started off with a magic trick in 2006-transforming from a grungy dive bar into a hip restaurant and lounge that offers comfort food, such as burgers and grilled cheese sandwiches, but also some stand-out dishes. The paella, dry-rubbed pork tenderloin and braised beef are excellent. After dinner on Thursdays through Sundays, live music or DJs turn the place into club, with popular local acts.

The local dive-but-clean neighborhood bar and pub, the popular Jeanie Johnston attracts an eclectic crowd ranging from hipster art students to young professionals and older motorcycle riders. A decent but unremarkable beer selection-from Bud Light and PBR through Sam Adams and Guinness, will save you from your thirst. The burgers and typical appetizers are reliable, and you can customize your burger with your favorites toppings like sautéed mushrooms and onions, cheese and bacon. Check it out on Saturday nights for the famous karaoke night complete with a friendly and enthusiastic crowd. Friday nights are no-cover live local music.

With a warm atmosphere and great fireplace, James's Gate is a pleasant bar and restaurant with a great beer selection and reasonable wine list. In the summer, the outdoor seating can be pleasant although the view could be better. The bar " "side outdoes the restaurant side, where prices are higher and the décor less comfortable. The chef's strength is definitely the standard to barely upscale pub food over his good but unsurprising attempt at restaurant cuisine. Good trivia night on Mondays, and pleasant Sunday brunch.
