The Society Hill Playhouse located on Society Hill (surprise!) has been an institution in the city since 1959. It is the city's first professional theatre house to bring world-class plays from different parts of America, as well as Canada and Europe. It has also produced hundreds of plays, such as Brecht and Weill's 'Threepenny Opera' in 1962 to Jean Genet's 'The Blacks' in 1965. Others include Brian Friel's 'Volunteers in 1978' and 'Freedom of the City' in 1979. Housed within the historic David Garrick Hall, the Playhouse boasts of two stages-the Main Stage and the Cabaret Theatre, which seats 90.

With over 7,000 students in six local branches, Settlement Music School may be the largest community music education program in the country. Founded in 1908, it has a great reputation for training classical and jazz musicians.
