This historic South Loop mansion was designed and built in 1870 by Otis L. Wheelock for Calvin Wheeler, the former president of the Chicago Board of Trade. The current owners, Scott and Debra Seger, struggled to refurbish the red brick Italianate building, but managed to transform the old building into an 11-room boutique hotel. Guests are treated with extravagances befitting royalty. Beds are filled with goose down, and the meals, prepared by British chef Denise Renalds, are served on bone China. The Segers imported all of the furniture from Europe. They restored every inch of the building's interior, including the Minton-Hollins tiles on the floors of the guest bathrooms. This is, pound for pound, one of the nicest places to stay in all of Chicago, making it a good idea to book reservations well in advance of your visit to the Windy City.
Just southwest of the Loop, this hotel isn't in the nicest of locations; however, it is close to Union Station, making it very convenient if you are conducting business in the suburbs as well as the city. The hotel offers a full range of amenities, such as two-line phones, coffeemakers, modem connections, a fitness room and a diner in the hotel. Rates are moderate, but not as inexpensive as you might think, considering it's a Holiday Inn in a so-so location.
It is not quite as fancy as its neighbor, the Chicago Hilton and Towers, but it provides fine accommodations for a substantially cheaper price. It is a choice hotel for those attending conventions at McCormick Center. The rooms are clean and recently renovated, and the location at the south end of the Loop is convenient for the tourist who wants to check out all the historical sights in the area. There is also a free shuttle service to the North Michigan Avenue Shopping district. Setting just 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) from the McCormick Place Convention Center, visitors can get there via a brisk walk, or take a ten-minute taxi drive.
This hotel is a good choice for thrifty museum lovers. The rates are reasonable, and John G. Shedd Aquarium and Oceanarium , Adler Planetarium and Field Museum (The) are all blocks away. On the downside, there isn't much else around, and the Loop isn't accessible by foot. Tourists at this hotel should familiarize themselves with the city's public transportation or use cabs to take full advantage of the city sites.
